New research publication on platforms in healthcare

Francisca published a new article in New Technology, Work and Employment, led by Justien Dingelstad and together with Iris Wallenburg. We describe how digital labour platforms for self-employed nurses envision nursing work as individualised, seamlessly integrated with technology and private life, and professional and predictable through quantification. We argue these visions establish new norms, values and identities surrounding nursing work. On the one hand, this allows nurses to renegotiate existing, gendered scripts of altruism and self-sacrifice. On the other hand, it normalizes individualised risks and unpaid work.

The research is part of the project ‘Towards a Gig Nursing Economy? The Role of Platforms in Self-Employed Nursing Work’, funded by Erasmus Trustfonds. More to follow!
